Samples have been collected across South Africa from a wide range of environments — including domestic homes (formal & informal) and rescue populations — ensuring a broad and realistic representation.

Current sample breakdown:

• 55% Pit bull–type dogs
• 15% Crossbreeds
• 9% Other breeds
• 1/3 Female | 2/3 Male

The Pit Bull Federation of South Africa has never denied the history, genetic traits, or original purpose of the American Pit Bull Terrier. In fact, we have repeatedly spoken about it — openly and honestly.

We consistently advocate for realistic education, which includes acknowledging the breed’s strength, drive, and the responsibilities that come with owning one.

However, realism also means acknowledging both sides of the breed.

When we talk about responsible ownership, proper training, environmental management, and understanding breed-specific traits — that is not contradictory. It is exactly what responsible advocacy looks like.

As correctly pointed out in the discussion, how a dog is raised still plays a major role in how it develops. Even a well-bred dog can become unstable in the wrong environment, while a properly managed one can live safely and successfully within a family structure.

What many owners of the American Pit Bull Terrier know — and live with every day — is that there is another side to this breed that the public rarely sees:

the affectionate, loyal, deeply human-oriented companion.

Acknowledging that softer side does not erase the breed’s capabilities or limitations, and it certainly does not mean we encourage irresponsible ownership or unsafe situations.

Quite the opposite.

Responsible advocacy requires us to speak honestly about:

• The breed’s history

• Its behavioural tendencies

• The responsibilities of ownership

• And yes — the strong bonds many owners experience with these dogs

Reducing the conversation to only one dimension helps no one — not the public, not responsible owners, and certainly not the dogs.

Education must be balanced, realistic, and complete.

If it is true that the owner intentionally taught the dogs to be aggressive toward humans, then this tragedy was not random, not unavoidable, and not the fault of a breed — it was the result of dangerous human choices.

American Pit Bull Terrier’s (APBT’s) are not naturally aggressive toward people. In fact, human-directed aggression goes against their fundamental temperament. Forcing, conditioning, or training any dog — especially a powerful one — to show aggression toward humans is a recipe for disaster.

As a recognized breed organization, we state this clearly and repeatedly:

APBT and pit bull–type dogs should NOT be kept for protection or guarding purposes

They should NOT be subjected to “man work” or human-aggression training

Teaching a dog to see people as threats is reckless, unethical, and deadly

This practice places families, communities, and the dogs themselves at risk. When things go wrong, it is always the dogs who pay the ultimate price — through death, confiscation, or blanket breed blame — while the real issue is ignored.

This tragic loss of life once again shows that irresponsible ownership, misuse, and deliberate aggression training are what must be addressed — not breed bans, fear-mongering, or misinformation.

We urge the public, authorities, and media:

Stop blaming breeds

Start holding owners accountable

Enforce existing laws

Promote ethical ownership and education

No more lives — human or animal — should be lost because warnings were ignored.

Education saves lives. Accountability saves lives

American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is a recognized breed.

But in everyday use, “pit bull” is wrongly used as an umbrella term based on appearance — not genetics.

Dogs often mislabeled as “pit bulls” include:

• American Staffordshire Terrier

• Staffordshire Bull Terrier

• American Bully

• American Bulldog

• Bull Terrier

• Mixed-breed dogs with blocky heads

Over 60% of reported “pit bull attacks” are misidentified, inflating statistics and creating a false narrative.

Why this matters for South Africa:

A “pit bull ban” based on appearance would target multiple breeds, punish responsible owners, and rely on guesswork — not science.

Breed bans regulate looks, not:

• Ownership responsibility

• Training and containment

• Accountability

• Mislabeling kills dogs and fails public safety.

For decades, the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) has been one of the most misunderstood dog breeds in the world. Too often, people glance at a mixed breed or a stray on the street and immediately label it a “pit bull.” But the truth is far more complex—and far more important to understand.

The Breed Standard: More Than Meets the Eye

Unlike breeds such as the American Bully, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bulldog, or Cane Corso—each of which was carefully bred for specific physical traits and appearances—the APBT was never designed to fit a single “look.”

Instead, the APBT was bred for strength, athleticism, and tenacity. These dogs were valued for their working ability, stamina, and loyalty, not for conforming to a rigid physical mould. That’s why two APBTs can look strikingly different, even though they share the same breed heritage.

Why Misidentification Matters

The problem arises when any muscular, blocky headed, short-haired dog is automatically labelled a “pit bull.” This misidentification has serious consequences:

• Shelter dogs – are often wrongly classified, which can affect adoption chances.

• Breed-specific legislation – unfairly targets APBTs, even when the dog in question isn’t one.

• Media coverage – frequently blames “pit bulls” for incidents without verifying the breed.

This cycle of misinformation fuels fear and stigma, painting the APBT as a menace rather than the loyal, hardworking companion it truly is.

A Call for Fairness

It’s time to stop blaming the APBT for everything. Breed identification should be based on knowledge, not assumptions. Just because a dog “looks like” a pit bull doesn’t mean it is one.

By learning the breed standard and recognizing the diversity within the APBT, we can break the stereotype and give these dogs the fair treatment they deserve.
