Dogs often mislabeled as “pit bulls” include: Over 60% of reported “pit bull attacks” are misidentified, inflating statistics and creating a false narrative. Why this matters for South Africa: A “pit bull ban” based on appearance would target multiple breeds, punish responsible owners, and rely on guesswork — not science. Breed bans regulate looks, not: Education — not fear — must guide policy.
