In collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Research Council, we are proud to share that our nationwide DNA research project is entering its final stage. Samples have been collected across South Africa from a wide range of environments — including domestic homes (formal & informal) and rescue populations — ensuring a broad and realistic representation. Current sample breakdown:• 20% Registered APBTs• 55% Pit bull–type dogs• 15% Crossbreeds• 9% Other breeds• 1/3 Female | 2/3 Male Analysis is still ongoing, and we are now moving closer to insights that will include home-based research findings — a critical step in understanding dogs within real-life environments. There seems to be some misunderstanding about our message in the previous article, so let us set the record straight. The Pit Bull Federation of South Africa has never denied the history, genetic traits, or original purpose of the American Pit Bull Terrier. In fact, we have repeatedly spoken about it — openly and honestly. We consistently advocate for realistic education, which includes acknowledging the breed’s strength, drive, and the responsibilities that come with owning one. However, realism also means acknowledging both sides of the breed. When we talk about responsible ownership, proper training, environmental management, and understanding breed-specific traits — that is not contradictory. It is exactly what responsible advocacy looks like. As correctly pointed out in the discussion, how a dog is raised still plays a major role in how it develops. Even a well-bred dog can become unstable in the wrong environment, while a properly managed one can live safely and successfully within a family structure. What many owners of the American Pit Bull Terrier know — and live with every day — is that there is another side to this breed that the public rarely sees: the affectionate, loyal, deeply human-oriented companion. Acknowledging that softer side does not erase the breed’s capabilities or limitations, and it certainly does not mean we encourage irresponsible ownership or unsafe situations. Quite the opposite. Responsible advocacy requires us to speak honestly about: • The breed’s history • Its behavioural tendencies • The responsibilities of ownership • And yes — the strong bonds many owners experience with these dogs Reducing the conversation to only one dimension helps no one — not the public, not responsible owners, and certainly not the dogs. Education must be balanced, realistic, and complete. That is exactly what the Pit Bull Federation of South Africa has always stood for!
