Responsible Ownership can prevent Unnecessary Loss of Live!

Following our interview with Newzroom Afrika on the tragic Vryburg incident, the Pit Bull Federation of South Africa extends sincere condolences to the affected family. Loss of life is never acceptable.

One fact remains clear: dogs do not fail — owners do.

Owners are legally and morally responsible for their dogs’ actions. Secure containment, proper socialization, training, and compliance with by-laws are not optional.

Breed bans will not solve this problem. Breed-specific legislation has failed worldwide. The real issue is irresponsible ownership and failure to act on problem behavior. We must address individual dogs, not blame an entire breed.

Proper breed identification also matters. Not every dog labelled a “pit bull” is a purebred American Pit Bull Terrier. Many are crossbreeds or pit bull-type dogs, which do not share the same predictable traits as responsibly bred APBTs.

If you choose to own a powerful dog, you must step up and take full accountability.

Responsibility, enforcement, and education — not fear — are the only way forward!
