“To understand the breed, one has to know its origin!”
The American Pit Bull Terrier has a complex history that intertwines with the development of several other breeds. Originally, the breed’s ancestors were bred in England in the 19th century for bull-baiting. After bull-baiting was outlawed in 1835, these dogs were crossbred with terriers to create a more agile and tenacious breed.
In early 1900’s these dogs were brought to the United States, and continued to be used for various purposes, including as farm dogs, family companions, and in some unfortunate cases, for dog fighting. Over time, the breed’s versatility and strong work ethic became evident, and it began to be recognised for its loyalty, intelligence, and courage.
Historically, they were bred for bull-baiting and later as farm dogs. This background contributes to their strong physical abilities and high stamina Today, the American Pit Bull Terrier is known for its positive traits, though it is still sometimes unfairly associated with aggression due to its history.
What do they look like? They have a strong, muscular build with a broad chest and a defined, athletic appearance. Their short coat is typically smooth and can come in various colours and patterns.
Temperament – Pit Bulls are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and high energy levels. They often form strong bonds with their families and can be very affectionate.
Special needs – They require consistent training and early socialisation to manage their energy and ensure they develop into well-behaved pets. Their intelligence can make them highly trainable, but they need positive reinforcement and firm leadership. Pit Bulls are prone to be animal aggressive and do not necessarily get along with other pets.
These traits can make them both a rewarding and demanding breed to own!
